Dermabrasion and dermaplaning is a treatment that removes the top layers of skin in order to level it out and allow the skin to grow back, minus the acne scars. This is done using an electrical instrument that contains a wire brush or diamond-impregnated burr.
You should see a 50 to 80% improvement in your acne scars. It will work best on scars that are shallow as opposed to deeper, ‘ice-pick’ scars.
Some scars that are larger beneath the skin will actually look worse after this procedure.
Complications from dermabrasion are minimal. This is due to the excellent blood supply to the face and the many oil glands present and so healing is quite rapid. However, in a minority of cases complications do arise. These include pigmentation changes (more common in darker skin), keloid (thickened/elevated) scar formation, and acne flare-ups.
You will probably need to have several treatments, depending on the depth of your scars.
